Verse 1:

tato yuddhaparishrAntaM samare chintayA sthitam |

rAvaNaM chAgrato dR^iShTvA yuddhAya samupasthitam ||


ततो युद्धपरिश्रान्तं समरे चिन्तया स्थितम् ।
रावणं चाग्रतो दृष्ट्वा युद्धाय समुपस्थितम् ॥१॥

rāvaṇam = to Ravana

Translation:

Then, weary from the battle and standing in contemplation, [Rama] saw Ravana before him, ready for the battle.


Verse 2:

daivataishcha samAgamya draShTumabhyAgato raNam |

upAgamyAbravIdrAmamagastyo bhagavAnR^iShiH ||


दैवतैश्च समागम्य द्रष्टुमभ्यागतो रणम् ।
उपागम्याब्रवीद्राममगस्त्यो भगवानृषिः ॥२॥

Translation:

The revered sage Agastya, having arrived with the gods to witness the battle, approached and spoke to Rama.


Verse 3:

rAma rAma mahAbAho shR^iNu guhyaM sanAtanam |

yena sarvAnarInvatsa samare vijayiShyasi ||


राम राम महाबाहो शृणु गुह्यं सनातनम् ।
येन सर्वानरीन्वत्स समरे विजयिष्यसि ॥३॥

Translation:

O Rama, mighty-armed Rama, listen to the eternal secret, by which you will be victorious over all enemies in battle.


Verse 4:

AdityahR^idayaM puNyaM sarvashatruvinAshanam |

jayAvahaM japennityamakShayaM paramaM shivam ||


आदित्यहृदयं पुण्यं सर्वशत्रुविनाशनम् ।
जयावहं जपेन्नित्यमक्षय्यं परमं शिवम् ॥४॥


Split Words and Meanings:


Adityahṛdayam = the heart (hymn) of Aditya (Sun God)

puṇyam = holy, sacred

sarva-śatru-vināśanam = destroyer of all enemies

jayāvaham = bestowing victory

japet = should recite, chant

Translation:

The hymn of Aditya (Sun God) is sacred, the destroyer of all enemies, bestowing victory. One should always recite it for eternal, supreme auspiciousness.


Verse 5:

sarvamaNgalamANgalyaM sarvapApapraNAshanam |

chintAshokaprashamanaM Ayurvardhanamuttamam ||


सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्यं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम् ।
चिन्ताशोकप्रशमनमायुर्वर्धनमुत्तमम् ॥५॥

sarvamangalam = all-auspicious

āṅgalyam = auspiciousness

sarva-pāpa-praṇāśanam = destroyer of all sins

chintā-śoka-praśamanam = alleviator of all worries and sorrows

āyur-vardhanam = increasing longevity

uttamam = the best, supreme


Translation:

This hymn is supremely auspicious, the bestower of all auspiciousness, the destroyer of all sins, alleviator of all worries and sorrows, and it enhances longevity.


Verse 6:

rashmimantaM samudyantaM devAsuranamaskR^itam |

pUjayasva vivasvantaM bhAskaraM bhuvaneshvaram ||


रश्मिमन्तं समुद्यन्तं देवासुरनमस्कृतम् ।
पूजयस्व विवस्वन्तं भास्करं भुवनेश्वरम् ॥६॥

devāsura-namaskṛtam = revered by gods and demons

vivasvantam = the radiant one (Sun)

Worship the radiant Sun God, full of rays, revered by gods and demons, the illuminator, the lord of the world.


Verse 7:

sarvadevAtmako hyeSha tejasvI rashmibhAvanaH |

eSha devAsuragaNA.NllokAn pAti gabhastibhiH ||


सर्वदेवात्मको ह्येषः तेजस्वी रश्मिभावनः ।
एष देवासुरगणान् लोकान् पाति गभस्तिभिः ॥७॥

Translation:

This radiant Sun, the essence of all gods, creator of rays, indeed sustains the worlds and protects the groups of gods and demons with his rays.


Verse 8:

eSha brahmA cha viShNushcha shivaH skandaH prajApatiH |

mahendro dhanadaH kAlo yamaH somo hyapAM patiH ||


एष ब्रह्मा  विष्णुश्च शिवः स्कन्दः प्रजापतिः ।
माहेन्द्रो धनदः कालो यमस्सोमो ह्यपां पतिः ॥८॥

Verse 9:

pitaro vasavaH sAdhyA hyashvinau maruto manuH |

vAyurvahniH prajAprANa R^itukartA prabhAkaraH ||


पितरो वसवस्साध्याः ह्यश्विनौ मरुतो मनुः ।
वायुर्वह्निः प्रजाप्राणा ऋतुकर्ता प्रभाकरः ॥९॥

Verse 10:

AdityaH savitA sUryaH khagaH pUShA gabhastimAn |

suvarNasadR^isho bhAnurhiraNyaretA divAkaraH ||


आदित्यः सविता सूर्यः खगः पूषा गभस्तिमान् ।
सुवर्णसदृशो भानुर्हिरण्यरेतो दिवाकरः ॥१०॥

Verse 11:

haridashvaH sahasrArchiH saptasaptirmarIchimAn |

timironmathanaH shambhustvaShTA mArtANDa aMshumAn ||


हरिदश्वस्सहस्रार्चिस्सप्तसप्तिर्मरीचिमान् ।
तिमिरोन्मथनश्शम्भुस्त्वष्टा मार्ताण्ड अंशुमान् ॥११॥

Verse 12:

hiraNyagarbhaH shishirastapano bhAskaro raviH |

agnigarbho.aditeH putraH sha~NkhaH shishiranAshanaH ||


हिरण्यगर्भश्शिशिरस्तपनो भास्करो रविः ।
अग्निगर्भोऽदितेः पुत्रः शङ्खश्शिशिरनाशनः ॥१२॥

Translation:

Verse 13:

vyomanAthastamobhedI R^igyajuHsAmapAragaH |

ghanavR^iShTirapAM mitro vindhyavIthI plava~NgamaH ||


व्योमनाथस्तमोभेदी ऋग्यजुस्सामपारगः ।
घनवृष्टिरपां मित्रो विन्ध्यवीथीप्लवङ्गमः ॥१३॥

Verse 14:

AtapI maNDalI mR^ityuH pi~NgalaH sarvatApanaH |

kavirvishvo mahAtejAH raktaH sarvabhavod.hbhavaH ||


आतपी मण्डली मृत्युः पिङ्गलस्सर्वतापनः ।
कविर्विश्वो महातेजाः रक्तस्सर्वभवोद्भवः ॥१४॥

Translation:

The scorcher, having a circular orb, death, tawny-colored, heating everything, the wise, all-pervasive, of great radiance, red, the source of all creation.


Verse 15:

nakShatragrahatArANAmadhipo vishvabhAvanaH |

tejasAmapi tejasvI dvAdashAtmannamo.astu te ||


नक्षत्रग्रहताराणामधिपो विश्वभावनः ।
तेजसामपि तेजस्वी द्वादशात्मन्नमोऽस्तु ते ॥१५॥

Verse 16:

namaH pUrvAya giraye pashchimAyAdraye namaH |

jyotirgaNAnAM pataye dinAdhipataye namaH ||


नमः पूर्वाय गिरये पश्चिमायाद्रये नमः ।
ज्योतिर्गणानां पतये दिनाधिपतये नमः ॥१६॥

namo namaH sahasrA.nsho AdityAya namo namaH ||


जयाय जयभद्राय हर्यश्वाय नमो नमः ।
नमो नमस्सहस्रांशो आदित्याय नमो नमः ॥१७॥

nama ugrAya vIrAya sAra~NgAya namo namaH |

namaH padmaprabodhAya mArtANDAya namo namaH ||


नम उग्राय वीराय सारङ्गाय नमो नमः ।
नमः पद्मप्रबोधाय मार्तण्डाय नमो नमः ॥१८॥

Verse 19:

brahmeshAnAchyuteshAya sUryAyAdityavarchase |

bhAsvate sarvabhakShAya raudrAya vapuShe namaH ||


ब्रह्मेशानाच्युतेशाय सूर्यादित्यवर्चसे ।
भास्वते सर्वभक्षाय रौद्राय वपुषे नमः ॥१९॥

tamoghnAya himaghnAya shatrughnAyAmitAtmane |

kR^itaghnaghnAya devAya jyotiShAM pataye namaH ||


तमोघ्नाय हिमघ्नाय शत्रुघ्नायामितात्मने ।
कृतघ्नघ्नाय देवाय ज्योतिषां पतये नमः ॥२०॥

Verse 21:

taptachAmIkarAbhAya vahnaye vishvakarmaNe |

namastamo.abhinighnAya ruchaye lokasAkShiNe ||


तप्तचामीकराभाय वह्नये विश्वकर्मणे ।
नमस्तमोऽभिनिघ्नाय रुचये लोकसाक्षिणे ॥२१॥

Verse 22:

nAshayatyeSha vai bhUtaM tadeva sR^ijati prabhuH |

pAyatyeSha tapatyeSha varShatyeSha gabhastibhiH ||


नाशयत्येष वै भूतं तदेव सृजति प्रभुः ।
पायत्येष तपत्येष वर्षत्येष गभस्तिभिः ॥२२॥

Translation:

This lord (Sun) indeed destroys the past and then creates it anew; he protects, heats, and causes to rain with his rays.


Verse 23:

eSha supteShu jAgarti bhUteShu pariniShThitaH |

eSha evAgnihotraM cha phalaM chaivAgnihotriNAm ||


एष सुप्तेषु जागर्ति भूतेषु परिनिष्ठितः ।
एष चैवाग्निहोत्रं  फलं चैवाग्निहोत्रिणाम् ॥२३॥

bhūteṣu = among beings

pariṇiṣṭhitaḥ = well established

Translation:

This Sun is awake among the sleeping beings and is well established among all beings; he is indeed the fire sacrifice and the fruit thereof for those who perform it.


Verse 24:

vedAshcha kratavashchaiva kratUnAM phalameva cha |

yAni kR^ityAni lokeShu sarva eSha raviH prabhuH ||


वेदाश्च क्रतवश्चैव क्रतूनां फलमेव  ।
यानि कृत्यानि लोकेषु सर्व एष रविः प्रभुः ॥

Verse 25:

enamApatsu kR^ichChreShu kAntAreShu bhayeShu cha |

kIrtayan puruShaH kashchinnAvasIdati rAghava ||


एनमापत्सु कृच्छ्रेषु कान्तारेषु भयेषु  ।
कीर्तयन् पुरुषः कश्चिन्नावसीदति राघव ॥२५॥

kāntāreṣu = in forests (or dangerous places)

bhayeṣu = in fears

rāghava = O Raghava (Rama)


Translation:

O Raghava (Rama), anyone who recites this hymn in difficulties, troubles, forests, or fears, does not despair.


Verse 26:

pUjayasvainamekAgro devadevaM jagat.hpatim |

etat triguNitaM japtvA yuddheShu vijayiShyasi ||


पूजयस्वैनमेकाग्रो देवदेवं जगत्पतिम् ।
एतत्त्रिगुणितं जप्त्वा युद्धेषु विजयिष्यसि ॥२६॥

Verse 27:

asminkShaNe mahAbAho rAvaNaM tvaM vadhiShyasi |

evamuktvA tadA.agastyo jagAma cha yathAgatam ||


अस्मिन् क्षणे महाबाहो रावणं त्वं वधिष्यसि ।
एवमुक्त्वा ततोऽगस्त्यो जगाम  यथागतम् ॥२७॥

O mighty-armed one, at this moment, you will slay Ravana. Having spoken thus, Agastya then departed as he had come.



Verse 28:

etachChrutvA mahAtejA naShTashoko.abhavattadA |

dhArayAmAsa suprIto rAghavaH prayatAtmavAn ||


एतच्छ्रुत्वा महातेजाः नष्टशोकोऽभवत्तदा ।
धारयामास सुप्रीतो राघवः प्रयतात्मवान् ॥२८॥

naṣṭa-śokaḥ = his sorrow disappeared

Having heard this, the greatly glorious Raghava (Rama) became free from sorrow and, very pleased, remained resolute-minded.


Verse 29:

AdityaM prekShya japtvA tu paraM harShamavAptavAn |

trirAchamya shuchirbhUtvA dhanurAdAya vIryavAn ||


आदित्यं प्रेक्ष्य जप्त्वा तु परं हर्षमवाप्तवान् ।
त्रिराचम्य शुचिर्भूत्वा धनुरादाय वीर्यवान् ॥२९॥

Translation:

Having gazed upon the Sun and recited the hymn, the valiant one indeed obtained supreme joy. After sipping water thrice and purifying himself, he took up his bow.


Verse 30:

rAvaNaM prekShya hR^iShTAtmA yuddhAya samupAgamat |

sarva yatnena mahatA vadhe tasya dhR^ito.abhavat ||


रावणं प्रेक्ष्य हृष्टात्मा युद्धाय समुपागमत् ।
सर्वयत्नेन महता वधे तस्य धृतोऽभवत् ॥३०॥


Split Words and Meanings:


rāvaṇam = Ravana

prekṣya = having seen

hṛṣṭa-ātmā = with a delighted heart

yuddhāya = for battle

samupāgamat = approached

sarva = all

yatnena = with effort

mahatā = great

vadhe = in killing

tasya = his (Ravana’s)

dhṛtaḥ = determined

abhavat = became


Translation:

Seeing Ravana and with a delighted heart, he approached for battle. With great effort, he became determined in his resolve to kill Ravana.



Verse 31:

atha raviravadannirIkShya rAmaM |

muditamanAH paramaM prahR^iShyamANaH |

nishicharapatisa~NkShayaM viditvA |

suragaNamadhyagato vachastvareti ||


अथ रविरवदन्निरीक्ष्य रामं मुदितमनाः परमंप्रहृष्यमाणः ।
निशिचरपतिसंक्षयं विदित्वा सुरगणमध्यगतोवचस्त्वरेति ॥३१॥


Split Words and Meanings:


atha = then

raviḥ = the Sun (Ravi)

avadan = spoke

nirīkṣya = having observed

rāmaṁ = Rama

mudita-manāḥ = with a delighted mind

paramam = supremely

prahṛṣyamāṇaḥ = greatly rejoicing

niśichara-pati-saṅkṣayaṁ = the destruction of the lord of night wanderers (Ravana)

viditvā = knowing

sura-gaṇa-madhyagataḥ = having arrived amidst the group of gods

vachaḥ = words

tvareti = hasten


Translation:

Then, the Sun, having observed Rama and with a delighted mind, supremely rejoicing, knowing the imminent destruction of Ravana, the lord of night wanderers, and having arrived amidst the group of gods, spoke: “Hasten.”
