**Sri Shani Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram**


**Verse 1:**

शनैश्चराय शान्ताय सर्वाभीष्टप्रदायिने । शरण्याय वरेण्याय सर्वेशाय नमो नमः ॥ १॥

- **शनैश्चराय (Shanaishcharaya):**

  - Shanai-shcharaya

  - To the slow-moving

- **शान्ताय (Shantaya):**

  - Shantaya

  - Peaceful

- **सर्वाभीष्टप्रदायिने (Sarvabhishtapradayine):**

  - Sarva-abhishta-pradayine

  - Grantor of all desires

- **शरण्याय (Sharanyaya):**

  - Sharanyaya

  - The refuge

- **वरेण्याय (Varenyaya):**

  - Varenyaya

  - The most excellent

- **सर्वेशाय (Sarveshaya):**

  - Sarveshaya

  - The lord of all

- **Translation:**

  - To the slow-moving, peaceful, grantor of all desires, the refuge, the most excellent, and the lord of all, salutations.


**Verse 2:**

सौम्याय सुरवन्द्याय सुरलोकविहारिणे । सुखासनोपविष्टाय सुन्दराय नमो नमः ॥ २॥

- **सौम्याय (Saumyaya):**

  - Saumyaya

  - Gentle

- **सुरवन्द्याय (Suravandyaya):**

  - Sura-vandyaya

  - Revered by gods

- **सुरलोकविहारिणे (Suralokaviharine):**

  - Sura-loka-viharine

  - Roaming the heavens

- **सुखासनोपविष्टाय (Sukhasanopavishtaya):**

  - Sukha-asana-upavishtaya

  - Seated comfortably

- **सुन्दराय (Sundaraya):**

  - Sundaraya

  - Beautiful

- **Translation:**

  - To the gentle, revered by gods, roaming the heavens, seated comfortably, and beautiful, salutations.



**Verse 3:**

घनाय घनरूपाय घनाभरणधारिणे । घनसारविलेपाय खद्योताय नमो नमः ॥ ३॥

- **घनाय (Ghanaya):**

  - Ghana-aya

  - To the dense one

- **घनरूपाय (Ghanarupaya):**

  - Ghana-rupaya

  - Having a solid form

- **घनाभरणधारिणे (Ghanabharanadharine):**

  - Ghana-abharana-dharine

  - Wearing heavy ornaments

- **घनसारविलेपाय (Ghanasaravilepaya):**

  - Ghana-sara-vilepaya

  - Anointed with thick paste

- **खद्योताय (Khadhyotaya):**

  - Khadyotaya

  - Like a firefly

- **Translation:**

  - To the dense one, having a solid form, wearing heavy ornaments, anointed with thick paste, and like a firefly, salutations.


**Verse 4:**

मन्दाय मन्दचेष्टाय महनीयगुणात्मने । मर्त्यपावनपादाय महेशाय नमो नमः ॥ ४॥

- **मन्दाय (Mandaya):**

  - Manda-aya

  - To the slow one

- **मन्दचेष्टाय (Mandacheshthaya):**

  - Manda-cheshtaya

  - With deliberate actions

- **महनीयगुणात्मने (Mahaniyagunatmane):**

  - Mahaniya-guna-atmane

  - Possessing noble qualities

- **मर्त्यपावनपादाय (Martyapavanapaday):**

  - Martya-pavana-padaya

  - Purifying mortals with his feet

- **महेशाय (Maheshaya):**

  - Maheshaya

  - The great lord

- **Translation:**

  - To the slow one, with deliberate actions, possessing noble qualities, purifying mortals with his feet, and the great lord, salutations.


**Verse 5:**

छायापुत्राय शर्वाय शरतूणीरधारिणे । चरस्थिरस्वभावाय चञ्चलाय नमो नमः ॥ ५॥

- **छायापुत्राय (Chhayaputraya):**

  - Chhaya-putraya

  - To the son of Chhaya

- **शर्वाय (Sharvaya):**

  - Sharvaya

  - The destructive one

- **शरतूणीरधारिणे (Sharatooneeradharine):**

  - Shara-tooneera-dharine

  - Holder of the arrow and quiver

- **चरस्थिरस्वभावाय (Charasthirasvabhavaya):**

  - Chara-sthira-svabhavaya

  - With both moving and stable nature

- **चञ्चलाय (Chanchalaya):**

  - Chanchalaya

  - Fickle

- **Translation:**

  - To the son of Chhaya, the destructive one, holder of the arrow and quiver, with both moving and stable nature, and fickle, salutations.


**Verse 6:**

नीलवर्णाय नित्याय नीलाञ्जननिभाय च । नीलाम्बरविभूषाय निश्चलाय नमो नमः ॥ ६॥

- **नीलवर्णाय (Neelavarnaya):**

  - Neela-varnaya

  - To the blue-colored

- **नित्याय (Nityaya):**

  - Nityaya

  - Eternal

- **नीलाञ्जननिभाय (Neelanjnanibhaya):**

  - Neela-anjana-nibhaya

  - Resembling blue collyrium

- **नीलाम्बरविभूषाय (Neelambaravibhooshaya):**

  - Neela-ambara-vibhooshaya

  - Adorned in blue garments

- **निश्चलाय (Nishchalaya):**

  - Nishchalaya

  - Unswerving

- **Translation:**

  - To the blue-colored, eternal, resembling blue collyrium, adorned in blue garments, and unswerving, salutations.


**Verse 7:**

वेद्याय विधिरूपाय विरोधाधारभूमये । भेदास्पदस्वभावाय वज्रदेहाय ते नमः ॥ ७॥

- **वेद्याय (Vedyaya):**

  - Vedyaya

  - To the knowable

- **विधिरूपाय (Vidhirupaya):**

  - Vidhi-rupaya

  - Embodiment of law

- **विरोधाधारभूमये (Virodhadharabhoomaye):**

  - Virodha-adhara-bhoomaye

  - Ground of opposition

- **भेदास्पदस्वभावाय (Bhedaspadasvabhavaya):**

  - Bheda-aspada-svabhavaya

  - Nature that creates distinctions

- **वज्रदेहाय (Vajradehaya):**

  - Vajra-dehaya

  - With a body hard as diamond

- **Translation:**

  - To the knowable, embodiment of law, ground of opposition, nature that creates distinctions, and with a body hard as diamond, salutations.


**Verse 8:**

वैराग्यदाय वीराय वीतरोगभयाय च । विपत्परम्परेशाय विश्ववन्द्याय ते नमः ॥ ८॥

- **वैराग्यदाय (Viragyaday):**

  - Vairagya-daya

  - Giver of dispassion

- **वीराय (Viraya):**

  - Veeraya

  - The brave

- **वीतरोगभयाय (Vitarogabhayaya):**

  - Vitaroga-bhayaya

  - Free from disease and fear

- **विपत्परम्परेशाय (Vipatparampareshaya):**

  - Vipat-parampara-ishaya

  - Lord of continuous calamities

- **विश्ववन्द्याय (Vishvavandyaya):**

  - Vishva-vandyaya

  - Worshipped by the world

- **Translation:**

  - To the giver of dispassion, the brave, free from disease and fear, lord of continuous calamities, and worshipped by the world, salutations.


**Verse 9:**

गृध्नवाहाय गूढाय कूर्मांगाय कुरूपिणे । कुत्सिताय गुणाढ्याय गोचराय नमो नमः ॥ ९॥

- **गृध्नवाहाय (Gridhnavaahaya):**

  - Gridhna-vaahaya

  - To the one riding a vulture

- **गूढाय (Goodhaya):**

  - Goodhaya

  - Mysterious

- **कूर्मांगाय (Kurmangaya):**

  - Koorma-angaya

  - With a body like a turtle

- **कुरूपिणे (Kuroopine):**

  - Kuroopine

  - Ugly in appearance

- **कुत्सिताय (Kutsitaya):**

  - Kutsitaya

  - Contemptible

- **गुणाढ्याय (Gunadhyaya):**

  - Guna-adhyaya

  - Abundant in virtues

- **गोचराय (Gocharya):**

  - Gocharaya

  - Visible

- **Translation:**

  - To the one riding a vulture, mysterious, with a body like a turtle, ugly in appearance, contemptible, yet abundant in virtues, and visible, salutations.


**Verse 10:**

अविद्यामूलनाशाय विद्याऽविद्यास्वरूपिणे । आयुष्यकारणायाऽपदुद्धर्त्रे च नमो नमः ॥ १०॥

- **अविद्यामूलनाशाय (Avidyamoolanashaya):**

  - Avidya-moola-nashaya

  - Destroyer of the root of ignorance

- **विद्याऽविद्यास्वरूपिणे (Vidya-Avidyaswaroopine):**

  - Vidya-avidya-swaroopine

  - Embodiment of both knowledge and ignorance

- **आयुष्यकारणाय (Ayushyakaranaya):**

  - Ayushya-karanaya

  - The cause of longevity

- **अपदुद्धर्त्रे (Apaduddhartre):**

  - Apa-uddhartre

  - Rescuer from troubles

- **Translation:**

  - To the destroyer of the root of ignorance, the embodiment of both knowledge and ignorance, the cause of longevity, and the rescuer from troubles, salutations.



**Verse 11:**

विष्णुभक्ताय वशिने विविधागमवेदिने । विधिस्तुत्याय वन्द्याय विरूपाक्षाय ते नमः ॥ ११॥

- **विष्णुभक्ताय (Vishnubhaktaya):**

  - Vishnu-bhaktaya

  - Devotee of Vishnu

- **वशिने (Vashine):**

  - Vashine

  - Powerful and controlling

- **विविधागमवेदिने (Vividhagamavedine):**

  - Vividha-agama-vedine

  - Knowledgeable in various scriptures

- **विधिस्तुत्याय (Vidhistutyaya):**

  - Vidhi-stutyaya

  - Praised by Brahma

- **वन्द्याय (Vandyaya):**

  - Vandyaya

  - Worthy of worship

- **विरूपाक्षाय (Virupakshaya):**

  - Virupakshaya

  - The one with diverse eyes

- **Translation:**

  - To the devotee of Vishnu, powerful and controlling, knowledgeable in various scriptures, praised by Brahma, worthy of worship, and the one with diverse eyes, salutations.


**Verse 12:**

वरिष्ठाय गरिष्ठाय वज्रांकुशधराय च । वरदाभयहस्ताय वामनाय नमो नमः ॥ १२॥

- **वरिष्ठाय (Varishthaya):**

  - Varishthaya

  - The greatest

- **गरिष्ठाय (Garishthaya):**

  - Garishthaya

  - The heaviest

- **वज्रांकुशधराय (Vajrankushadharaya):**

  - Vajra-ankusha-dharaya

  - Holding the thunderbolt and hook

- **वरदाभयहस्ताय (Varadabhayahastaya):**

  - Varada-abhaya-hastaya

  - Bestowing boons and fearlessness with his hands

- **वामनाय (Vamanaya):**

  - Vamanaya

  - The dwarf

- **Translation:**

  - To the greatest, the heaviest, holding the thunderbolt and hook, bestowing boons and fearlessness with his hands, and the dwarf, salutations.



**Verse 13:**

ज्येष्ठापत्नीसमेताय श्रेष्ठाय मितभाषिणे । कष्टौघनाशकर्याय पुष्टिदाय नमो नमः ॥ १३॥

- **ज्येष्ठापत्नीसमेताय (Jyeshtapatnisametaya):**

  - Jyeshta-patni-sametaya

  - Accompanied by his elder wife

- **श्रेष्ठाय (Shreshthaya):**

  - Shreshthaya

  - The most excellent

- **मितभाषिणे (Mitabhashine):**

  - Mita-bhashine

  - Moderate in speech

- **कष्टौघनाशकर्याय (Kashtaughanashakaryaya):**

  - Kashta-ougha-nashakaryaya

  - Destroyer of a multitude of troubles

- **पुष्टिदाय (Pushtiday):**

  - Pushti-daya

  - Giver of nourishment

- **Translation:**

  - To the one accompanied by his elder wife, the most excellent, moderate in speech, destroyer of a multitude of troubles, and the giver of nourishment, salutations.


**Verse 14:**

स्तुत्याय स्तोत्रगम्याय भक्तिवश्याय भानवे । भानुपुत्राय भव्याय पावनाय नमो नमः ॥ १४॥

- **स्तुत्याय (Stutyaya):**

  - Stutyaya

  - Praiseworthy

- **स्तोत्रगम्याय (Stotragamyaya):**

  - Stotra-gamyaya

  - Approachable through hymns

- **भक्तिवश्याय (Bhaktivashyaya):**

  - Bhakti-vashyaya

  - Captivated by devotion

- **भानवे (Bhanave):**

  - Bhanave

  - The son of the Sun

- **भानुपुत्राय (Bhanuputraya):**

  - Bhanu-putraya

  - The son of Bhanu (Sun)

- **भव्याय (Bhavyaya):**

  - Bhavyaya

  - Auspicious

- **पावनाय (Pavanaya):**

  - Pavanaya

  - Purifying

- **Translation:**

  - To the praiseworthy, approachable through hymns, captivated by devotion, the son of the Sun, auspicious, and purifying, salutations.



**Verse 15:**

धनुर्मण्डलसंस्थाय धनदाय धनुष्मते । तनुप्रकाशदेहाय तामसाय नमो नमः ॥ १५॥

- **धनुर्मण्डलसंस्थाय (Dhanurmandalasamsthaya):**

  - Dhanur-mandala-samsthaya

  - Positioned in the zodiac sign of Sagittarius

- **धनदाय (Dhanadaya):**

  - Dhana-daya

  - The giver of wealth

- **धनुष्मते (Dhanushmate):**

  - Dhanush-mate

  - Skilled with the bow

- **तनुप्रकाशदेहाय (Tanuprakashadehaya):**

  - Tanu-prakasha-dehaya

  - With a body radiating light

- **तामसाय (Tamasaya):**

  - Tamasaya

  - Embodying darkness

- **Translation:**

  - To the one positioned in the zodiac sign of Sagittarius, the giver of wealth, skilled with the bow, with a body radiating light, and embodying darkness, salutations.


**Verse 16:**

अशेषजनवन्द्याय विशेषफलदायिने । वशीकृतजनेशाय पशूनाम्पतये नमः ॥ १६॥

- **अशेषजनवन्द्याय (Asheshajanavandyaya):**

  - Ashesha-jana-vandyaya

  - Worshipped by countless people

- **विशेषफलदायिने (Visheshaphaladayine):**

  - Vishesh-phala-dayine

  - Giver of special fruits

- **वशीकृतजनेशाय (Vasheekrutajanaeshaya):**

  - Vasheekrita-janeshaya

  - The master of those under control

- **पशूनाम्पतये (Pashoonampataye):**

  - Pashoonam-pataye

  - The lord of animals

- **Translation:**

  - To the one worshipped by countless people, the giver of special fruits, the master of those under control, and the lord of animals, salutations.

खेचराय खगेशाय घननीलाम्बराय च । काठिन्यमानसायाऽर्यगणस्तुत्याय ते नमः ॥ १७॥

  - To the one moving through the sky, the lord of birds, clad in dark blue garments, with a tough mind, and praised by the noble, salutations.


**Verse 18:**

नीलच्छत्राय नित्याय निर्गुणाय गुणात्मने । निरामयाय निन्द्याय वन्दनीयाय ते नमः ॥ १८॥

- **नीलच्छत्राय (Neelachhatraya):**

  - Neela-chhatraya

  - Holding a blue umbrella

- **नित्याय (Nityaya):**

  - Nityaya

  - Eternal

- **निर्गुणाय (Nirgunaya):**

  - Nirgunaya

  - Beyond qualities

- **गुणात्मने (Gunatmane):**

  - Guna-atmane

  - Full of qualities

- **निरामयाय (Niramayaya):**

  - Niramayaya

  - Free from illness

- **निन्द्याय (Nindyaya):**

  - Nindyaya

  - Beyond reproach

- **वन्दनीयाय (Vandaniyaya):**

  - Vandaniyaya

  - Worthy of veneration

- **Translation:**

  - To the one holding a blue umbrella, eternal, beyond qualities yet full of them, free from illness, beyond reproach, and worthy of veneration, salutations.

धीराय दिव्यदेहाय दीनार्तिहरणाय च । दैन्यनाशकरायाऽर्यजनगण्याय ते नमः ॥ १९॥

- **दिव्यदेहाय (Divyadehaya):**

  - Divya-dehaya

  - With a divine body

- **दीनार्तिहरणाय (Dinarthiharanaaya):**

- **दैन्यनाशकराय (Dainyanashakaraya):**

  - Destroyer of misery

- **अर्यजनगण्याय (Aryajanaganyaya):**

  - Arya-jana-ganyaya

  - Esteemed by the noble

- **Translation:**

  - To the courageous, with a divine body, remover of the suffering of the destitute, destroyer of misery, and esteemed by the noble, salutations.


**Verse 20:**

क्रूराय क्रूरचेष्टाय कामक्रोधकराय च । कळत्रपुत्रशत्रुत्वकारणाय नमो नमः ॥ २०॥

- **क्रूराय (Krooraya):**

  - Krooraya

  - To the cruel

- **क्रूरचेष्टाय (Krooracheshthaya):**

  - Kroora-cheshthaya

  - With harsh actions

- **कामक्रोधकराय (Kamakrodhakaraya):**

  - Kama-krodha-karaya

  - The cause of desire and anger

- **कळत्रपुत्रशत्रुत्वकारणाय (Kalatraputrashatrutvakaranaya):**

  - Kalatra-putra-shatrutva-karanaya

  - The reason for enmity with spouse and children

- **Translation:**

  - To the cruel, with harsh actions, the cause of desire and anger, and the reason for enmity with spouse and children, salutations  


**Verse 21:**

परिपोषितभक्ताय परभीतिहराय । भक्तसंघमनोऽभीष्टफलदाय नमो नमः ॥ २१॥

- **परिपोषितभक्ताय (Pariposhitabhaktaya):**

  - Pariposhita-bhaktaya

  - Nurturer of devotees

- **परभीतिहराय (Parabhitiharaya):**

  - Parabheeti-haraya

  - Remover of others’ fears

- **भक्तसंघमनोऽभीष्टफलदाय (Bhaktasanghamano'bishtaphaladay):**

  - Bhakta-sangha-mano-'bhishta-phaladay

  - Granter of the desired fruits to the collective minds of devotees

- **Translation:**

  - To the nurturer of devotees, remover of others’ fears, and the granter of the desired fruits to the collective minds of devotees, salutations.


**Concluding Verse:**

इत्थं शनैश्चरायेदं नांनामष्टोत्तरं शतम् । प्रत्यहं प्रजपन्मर्त्यो दीर्घमायुरवाप्नुयात् ॥

- **इत्थं (Ittham):**

  - Ittham

  - Thus

- **शनैश्चरायेदं नांनामष्टोत्तरं शतम् (Shanaishcharayedam Namnamashtottaram Shatam):**

  - Shanaishcharaya-idam namnam-ashtottaram shatam

  - These are the one hundred and eight names of Shani

- **प्रत्यहं प्रजपन्मर्त्यो दीर्घमायुरवाप्नुयात् (Pratyaham Prajapanmartyo Deerghamayuravapnuyat):**

  - Pratyaham prajapan martyo deergham ayur avapnuyat

  - Daily chanting by mortals bestows longevity

- **Translation:**

  - Thus are the one hundred and eight names of Shani, which, when chanted daily by mortals, bestow longevity.
